Australia's idea of a 'fair go' was rewarded in 1981, when Queenslander Dick Johnson took victory at Bathurst in his 'Tru-Blu"" XD Falcon, with co-driver John ""Rusty"" French. Having suffered the indignation of 'The Rock' incident the previous year, the struggling Johnson had taken fight to the big-budget dominance of the Holden Dealer Team, and his stolen victory tugged at the heartstrings of Australian racing fans. Johnson's pouring of emotion saw a flood of donations even before the end of the 1980 race in which it happened. He rewarded their generosity not only with the 1981 Bathurst triumph, but also in winning the first of what would be the five touring car titles. The ""Tru-Blu"" Falcon, and Johnson, became motorsport legends in the process.
