It's impossible to mention Ford and Bathurst without Allan Moffat's Track Red Phase III GT-HO, complete with a cardboard box forced into its front grille. While the arrival of V8s from Ford, Holden and Chrysler had seeded the muscle car era, the arms-race to develop these formidable machines resulted in what has become a motoring and cultural icon. The Phase III - as its name suggests - was an iteration of the XW GT Phase II, which gave the XY a formidable arsenal: the iconic 351 cubic-inch Cleveland V8 with a huge Holley carburettor, iconic bonnet 'shaker' and 9 inch LSD at the rear. While chief rivals took an alternate tack with their six-cylinder racers, the Phase III was a sledgehammer that dominated Bathurst and all rivals with brute force, with Moffat heading a 1-2-3 finish, cardboard box and all.
