Two decades after the Falcon GT's first V8 win, the four-cylinder turbocharged Ford Sierra RS500 gob-smacked Australian motor racing when European teams brought them to Bathurst 1987. Queensland's Dick Johnson, inspired by the interlopers would extract revenge and dominate on Australian circuits in his immaculately prepared, Ross Stone built 1989 Sierra. 'Getting a handle"" on the art of turbocharging was the key to Johnson winning the ATCC for 1988 and 1989, capped off with a victory at Bathurst 19989 for good measure.
The red-and-gold Sierra was a cut above the rest and not just in Australia. Johnson took one of his RS500's to Silverstone in the UK and promptly parked it on the pole position by more than 2.0 seconds, proving his Aussie RS500s truly were 'the fastest Sierra's in the world'.
